About the book
Known for a long time and yet popular only for a relatively short time. Channa, or snakehead fish, are exciting and versatile animals that are fascinating both in the wild and in the aquarium, and their multi-faceted biodiversity provides a niche for every keeper.
Dominik Niemeier, who has been dealing with these fish since his childhood and is considered one of the most accomplished snakehead fish experts in Europe, illuminates the subject from all sides, closes gaps, spans arcs and points out new lines of thought.
The book “Snakehead fishes” deals intensively with the families of snakeheads from different points of view. The first part covers the history, its classification of natural as well as alien distribution, its endangerment and protection status, and with different aspects of its use as food, sport and aquarium fish, among others.
The second part is about keeping snakehead fishes in the aquarium. Among other things, the aquarium is discussed in detail, as well as the socialization, behavior, reproduction and breeding.
In the third part, the author presents almost all species represented in the hobby, both the scientifically described and the as yet undescribed species, in words and pictures.
This book was written for keepers, the curious, scientists, nerds, and all fans of snakeheads. At the latest after reading this book, you will be one too!
The book will be published in a German-language and an English-language version in early summer 2022.
It is their individuality, their character, this uniqueness that I could never find in any other fish

The Author
Dominik Niemeier has been active in aquaristics since 1992 and has specialized in snakeheads since 1999. He publishes regularly in journals and lectures, including at the international snakehead meeting he organizes. He is known worldwide as an expert on snakeheads and also contributes to scientific papers on the subject himself.
In addition to his involvement in various social media groups and forums, he runs the largest German-language website on the subject. He has since kept and successfully propagated most of the known snakeheads in the aquarium, including some first-time offspring. He is currently dedicated to the reproduction of Channa barca in the aquarium and is close to achieving his goal with the world’s first documented egg laying.
Since his childhood he has been actively and passively involved in animal, nature and species conservation and works as an animal (conservation) officer for the pet trade. Seit seiner Kindheit engagiert er sich aktiv und passiv für den Tier-, Natur- und Artenschutz und arbeitet als Tier(schutz)beauftragter für den Zoofachhandel.
