About the book

They have been known for a long time and yet have only recently become popular. Channa, or snakeheads, are exciting and versatile animals that are fascinating both in the wild and in the aquarium and offer a niche for every keeper thanks to their diverse range of species.

Dominik Niemeier, who has been involved with these fish since his childhood and is regarded as one of the most experienced snakehead fish experts in Europe, sheds light on the subject from all sides, closes gaps, spans arcs and points out new lines of thought.

The book "Snakeheads" deals intensively with the families of snakeheads from various perspectives. The first part covers the history, their classification of natural and alien distribution, their endangered and protected status and various aspects of their use as food, sport and aquarium fish.

The second part deals with keeping snakeheads in the aquarium. Among other things, the aquarium, as well as socialization, behaviour, reproduction and breeding are discussed in detail.

In the third part, the author presents almost all the species represented in the hobby, both the scientifically described and the as yet undescribed species, in words and pictures.

This book was written for keepers, curious people, scientists, nerds, and all fans of snakeheads. After reading this book, you will be one too!

After the German-language version was published at the beginning of 2024, the English-language version will now be published in the course of 2025.

The Author

Dominik Niemeier has been an aquarist since 1992 and has specialized in snakeheads since 1999. He regularly publishes in specialist journals and gives lectures, including at the international snakehead fish meeting that he organizes. He is known worldwide as an expert on snakeheads and also contributes to scientific papers on the subject.

In addition to his involvement in various social media groups and forums, he runs the largest German-language website on the subject. In the meantime, he has kept and successfully bred most of the known snakeheads in the aquarium, including some first-time offspring. He is currently dedicated to the reproduction of Channa barca in the aquarium and is close to achieving his goal with the world's first documented egg laying.

Since his childhood, he has been actively and passively involved in animal, nature and species conservation and works as an animal (conservation) officer for the pet trade. The intention for his book about snakeheads is based on the desire that knowledge about these unique creatures will lead to better protection of these fish families in their habitats and at the same time to optimal care in the aquarium hobby.
